🔗 Share this article From Praise to Fury: Right-wing Response to Epstein Document Release is Divided. Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of documents related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner. Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole Justice Department representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so transparent with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter outlining the censorship process. Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections While Trump's identity and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the extensive black blocks prompt serious questions about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans immediately called for increased transparency. “The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene. In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and implied that a subsequent legislature may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this file dump grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued. A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure But, a segment of rightwing commentators and former President allies came out strongly behind the administration. The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces obscured. Yet a few are not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, enabled some conservative voices to go on the attack. “It’s quite ironic how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer. “Recently released documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.” Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a comment. “The release is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response concluded. Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Muted However, overall comment on the right was relatively subdued following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for action that came before the legislative approval to enact a law mandating the documents' publication. The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing personalities were given physical binders of materials that contained little new information.
