The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
